Three Dark Crowns

Author:   Kendare Blake

Genre:     Fantasy

Rating:    L

Synopsis:

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.
But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.
The last queen standing gets the crown.

Opinion

It’s been a while since I found a series that I really enjoyed. This series will take sisterly rivalry to the next level.  The story centers on a set of Queen triplets- Arisnoe, Mirabella, and Katherine. Each of them is born with a gift.  Their queen mother knows what their gifts are from birth. Mirabella is an elemental. Katherine is a poisoner, and Arisnoe is a naturalist. The only problem is that of the three, Mirabella is the strongest with her gift.  Arisnoe and Katherine are so weak they are almost giftless. Each Queen is raised with people who can train them in their gift.

The story details life for each of the queens leading up to their sixteenth birthday.  Each of the families raising the queens have grown to love them and are desperate for each to survive and become Queen. Two of the sisters seem to accept their fate.  However, Mirabella doesn’t want to kill either of her sisters.

A plan is devised to give Mirabella a bloodless victory, but it backfires. Then the year starts, and all three queens want vengeance.

But there is one tiny problem. Arisnoe discovers after an attempt by Katherine to poison her that she isn’t a naturalist. She’s a poisoner.

So that begs the question, if the Queen knows the gifts of the triplets upon birth, how On earth did she get the triplets gifts mixed up?  Was this the design of the Queen?  Did someone switch two of the triplets on purpose?  However this happened, this is shaping up to be a fight like none other.  I think all of the queens might be the most powerful of their true gifts, and they will be more than evenly matched.
